COPPINS VS THE RUMOURS

It was as early as the Lommel round of the Motocross MX1 World Championship back in August that the then rumors started flying through the pits about Josh Coppins future as a professional racer.

At first their were signs JC could well be on his way home down-under to compete in the New Zealand and Australian race seasons. Then the media went nuts over a possible sighting of JC arriving at a private Aprilia test track fully clothed in MX gear, jumping into a van then back out onto the track for a few laps, before hoping straight back into the same car he turned up in still in his MX gear and leaving. One final rumor clouded JC returning back to his old Honda stomping ground riding for CAS Honda in 2010 - with CAS Honda still looking to fill one position on the team, it could well be a possibility.

At this stage in his career he will no doubt be looking for the best contract that will benefit the Josh Coppin's brand. We have all heard how tight the economy is over in Europe and America, let alone in the South Pacific, which has left many international riders pondering 'do I take a pay cut or do I stand by my laurels and demand what possibly the industry seems incapable of producing at this point in time'.

Josh Coppins is pondering no more. His future in the world of professional Motocross for 2010 is cemented. Look out for Josh Coppins all-revealing column in the November issue of Kiwi Rider due in your letterbox on the 15th of October!

SMITH WINS AUS SAFARI

GHR Honda takes another Safari win

Twenty-year old Condobolin rider, Jacob Smith, has become the youngest ever winner of the Australasian Safari after dominating the seven-day event, which finished in the Western Australian gold mining city of Kalgoorlie today.
Riding a GHR Honda CRF 450X, Smith took the lead on the third of the event's 19 timed stages and finished the 3771 kilometre event 14 minutes and 18 seconds ahead of his brother, Todd Smith, riding a KTM. Defending champion, Ben Grabham, also on a KTM, was third, three minutes 30 seconds further back.
The final day of the off-road marathon saw competitors tackle two stages on a 165 kilometre loop out of the gold mining city of Kalgoorlie. Navigational skills were really tested over a number of tricky station tracks.
Ben Grabham started the event as hot favourite in the bike section after winning the past two Safaris, but his hopes of a third straight win ended on day two when he lost a rear tyre and dropped over an hour to the Smith brothers.
From then on, Jacob Smith controlled the event, and the third year apprentice linesman was elated with his victory.
"It's fantastic to beat to Ben (Grabham) as he's the best rider in Australia," Smith said. "Any time you can beat him it's a good achievement. It's my third Safari, so it's third time lucky - I was second in 2007, and had an engine failure last year."
While he wasn't the event favourite, Smith was always aiming for victory.
"I always race to win, I don't do it for second, but it was such a strong field it was always going to be tough. But after the first few days I knew I could do it."
Having his 24-year old brother in second place was an added bonus.
"We work together, even though we're on different teams, and we support each other," Smith said. "We always wanted to be 1-2, it was just a case of who was first and who was second."
Anything but a full-time professional rider, Smith will be back at work on Monday morning, less than 48 hours after his historic victory.
Swedish rider, Annie Seel, relished her first Safari experience, and reaped praise on the event and her fellow competitors.
"I think if you want to do the Dakar in Argentina then you need to do this event first as a training event," the 40-year old veteran said. "I'm going to try to sell the event back home and get more competitors for next year.
"I was particularly impressed by how fast the locals ride with the navigation. An Aussie team in the Dakar could do very well. For me, this event was as tough as the Dakar."

Final results, 2009 Australasian Safari (provisional)

1 Jacob SMITH (NSW), Honda CRF 450 X, 22h 58m 09s
2 Todd SMITH (NSW), KTM 530 EXC, +14m 18s
3 Ben GRABHAM (NSW), KTM 530 EXC, +17m 48s
4 Ivan ERCEG (WA), KTM 450 EXC, +1h 58m 57s
5 David SCHWARZ (SA), Husaberg, +2hrs 32m 25s
We would like to thank the team for their all efforts, the supporters and all our sponsors for the continuing support.

JULY 6, 2009: It's now three in a row for Taumarunui ATV ace Quentin Palmer.

The Suzuki all terrain vehicle (ATV) racer was unstoppable at the New Zealand TT Championships near Kuratau, on the south-western tip of Lake Taupo, at the weekend, storming to an unbeaten string of five wins over the two days.

"I've had the flu the past few weeks, so I was surprised it went so well for me," said the 28-year-old Palmer afterwards. "I was worried I wouldn't be able to perform ...but here I am, on top of the podium."

UK SUPERBIKES: SEELEY REMAINS UNBEATEN

Relentless Suzuki's Alastair Seeley's remarkable run of race wins continued today at Knockhill in the British National 1000cc Superstock class on his 2009 GSX-R1000 as he took seven wins from seven starts.

The Carrickfergus rider picked himself up after a high-speed qualifying crash on Saturday to increase his championship lead to 48 points.

In the British Superbike races, Ian Lowry had a day of mixed fortunes, taking sixth place in race one after a race-long battle with Simon Andrews and James Ellison, but a technical problem forced the 22-year-old to retire in race two after completing only 7 laps. Atsu Watanabe improved on his 2008 results at Knockhill taking 14th and 15th in the two BSB races.

Alastair Seeley:
"We set a plan today to get to the front early and lead throughout. Brogan set a blistering pace in the opening laps of race two but I hung in there, and when he tired in the closing stages I got to the front and pulled the pin. The 2009 GSX-R1000 had more steam up through the start and finish, so I just put my head down and got on with it. It's pleasing to win at Knockhill and more pleasing to get another couple of wins for Suzuki, Relentless and all our sponsors."

Ian Lowry:
"I'm a bit disappointed as I got robbed in race one right at the end for fourth place; then in race two we had to retire with a mechanical problem. We had made some radical chassis changes for race two, which I was looking forward to trying-out over a full race distance on my GSX-R1000 Superbike. The boys did a great job with the bike after working late into the night to get it ready for me - so a big thanks to everyone. It's now time to knuckle down and finish the season with some strong results."

Philip Neill - Team Principal:
"We are running out of superlatives for Alastair Seeley. He showed a lot of character this weekend after that big crash on Saturday. He carried a slight injury into the races but didn't complain or make any excuses, which is a rare trait these days with riders. There's been a lot of talk about putting Alastair on a Superbike but we aren't getting carried away. He has a job to do in the Superstock class and at the minute it's going to plan on the 2009 GSX-R1000. "Ian had another confident display on the Superbike, again after a big accident in qualifying when another bike took him out. The boys spent all night rebuilding the bike for Ian, so it was good to see him rewarding the team with his fighting spirit. He's now confident enough to start experimenting with different types of set-up, and that's what we aim to test in the coming weeks. "Atsu is continuing to build his confidence on the British tracks and bettered his times at Knockhill. BJ Toal was a bit unfortunate having to ride this weekend with a shoulder injury."

KIWI MOTARDER HEATS UP BANGKOK

Saturday the 27th of June witnessed the Thailand Supermotard Championship competed for on the outskirts of Northern Bangkok.

Searing heat challenged the event as the temperature ramped up past 36 degrees. The event was sponsored by Suzuki Thailand and drew competition from all over Asia, Australia, United States and New Zealand.

Former New Zealander and ex-Huntly motocross racer Larry Baker was a surprised man at the event, taking 3rd overall with a 4th and two 2nd placings in the three race format on his privately entered Yamaha YZ450F.

Pictured here on the podium during the presentation ceremony, the quiet Huntly man looks mildly bemused by his success but no doubt was delighted as the wreath and trophy were presented to him.

Motard has a strong following in Bangkok with a purpose built circuit fitted with a full-on pit lane set-up and even accommodates entry level modified scooter racing to get you started. That same podium Larry Baker is standing on featured a USA rider in 1st position with local Thai' ace in 2nd.

Congratulations Larry on the effort!

US NEWS: REED CONTINUES TO LEAD MX SERIES

Rockstar Makita Suzuki Factory Racing's Chad Reed battled the elevation as well as his competitors at Colorado's Thunder Valley MX Park and came away with his overall championship points lead intact.

The two-time AMA Supercross champion finished in fourth place overall, thanks to third and seventh-placed moto finishes. Rockstar Makita Suzuki team mate Michael Byrne was right there with Reed, finishing in fifth place overall. The Australian rode two impressive motos, bringing home sixth and fourth finishes.

Finally, an injured Mike Alessi attempted to race the first moto but crashed early and was unable to finish. Alessi recently had successful surgery on his broken kneecap and hopes to resume racing full-time as soon as possible.

In the 250 class, Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey finished with identical results to his 450 class team mate Byrne. In the first moto, Dungey overcame a bad start to go from 21st to sixth place on his Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z250. In the second moto, the Minnesotan fared better on the start and brought home a fourth-place finish. Dungey is currently second overall in the championship points standings.

Chad Reed:

"I got a good start, actually a great start, in the first moto, then I went out and rode like crap out there. It's pretty disappointing. I've been struggling all day long. In the second moto, I was still struggling. I'm dealing with some personal issues that I just have no control over and it's tough. But I've got to say thanks to all the guys at the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team."

Michael Byrne:

"It was a pretty good weekend for us. I had a good practice again this week, which was good for me. I was a little bummed in the first moto because I was in third at one point and then some guys got by me. But I'm still making progress, so I can't be too disappointed. I have to look at where I'm coming from. In the second moto, I rode strong. I just need to work on a little more speed so I can run with the guys at the front."

Mike Alessi:

"I wanted to get back in the championship because there's still a lot of races to go and motos to be raced and the championship isn't out of reach. So I just wanted to try and get some points this weekend. In the first moto, I got a great start - I think I was second or third right off the gate, but a few guys got past and they were running a fast pace. I was trying to stay with them but I went down and my first thought was my knee. I thought about trying to make the second moto, because that's just my mentality - even after I crashed I tried to do a few laps -- but it just hurt too much."

Ryan Dungey:

"It was a tough race and the altitude definitely played a part, but everybody had to deal with it - no excuses. Where I really threw it away was on the starts. I just couldn't get off the line like I wanted to and that set me back. But overall, I came out of this race healthy and I finished both motos, even though I've struggled here in the past. Now I'm just looking toward Red Bud."

US NEWS: WIMMER AND GUST DOMINATE MUDDY CREEK

Rockstar Makita Suzuki Racing's Dustin Wimmer and Doug Gust celebrated their first double podium of the season at the weekend's Muddy Creek AMA ATV Motocross National in Blountville in Tennessee.

Wimmer piloted his Rockstar Makita Suzuki QuadRacer R450 to victory while team mate Gust followed him home in second place. This victory is Wimmer's fourth of the 2009 season and he is currently in second place in the overall championship points standings. For Gust, this result marks his third podium finish of the season and he is in fourth place in the overall championship
points standings.

In the GNCC, Rockstar Makita Suzuki Racing's Chris Borich continues his winning ways: The series championship points leader charged hard on his Rockstar Makita Suzuki QuadRacer R450 at the Snowshoe National in West Virginia and picked up his fourth consecutive victory of the season.

As if that weren't impressive enough, this win is also Borich's sixth overall win this season and Borich now heads into the GNCC's two-month summer break with more than 20 points on second place.

Dustin Wimmer - 1st place AMA ATV MX:

"It feels great to be back on top. In the first moto, once I got the track down, I just put my head down and started passing people on my Rockstar Makita Suzuki QuadRacer R450. I had to work hard for the win in the first moto but in moto two, I got a much better start and I was able to take over the lead quickly and just be in cruise control. This win was a real confidence-booster for me. I put in a lot of hard work and it paid off for me this weekend. I'm still only at about 95 per cent but I'll be at 100 per cent for round nine and I'm looking for another win. I'm only about seven points off the lead and I hope to take over that soon and give Suzuki another championship."

Doug Gust - 2nd place AMA ATV MX:

"My Rockstar Makita Suzuki performed really well for me this weekend. It had the power I needed to get good starts and good results. I put in a good charge in the first moto and worked up to second. I've been doing a lot of training in between races and I'll be training hard again because at the next round, I want to win. It's really great when Dustin and I are both on the podium in the number one and two spots like we were this weekend. It's a big confidence-booster for the team when we both do well. I'm in fourth place in the points chase right now, so I'm excited about that."

Chris Borich - 1st place GNCC:

"The track was a little different from the last time I raced here. They added in a 10-mile section so we were doing 20-mile laps. I took it easy on my Rockstar Makita Suzuki QuadRacer R450 on the first lap because I didn't know what to expect. My goal was to keep moving forward. I'm really happy that I have a nice points lead going into the break. It takes a little weight off my shoulders. Over the break, I'm going to take a couple of weeks off to relax, and then I'm going to be training hard again.

"The prospect of taking a championship this year has me really pumped up, but I have to stay grounded and focused. I'm just going to take it one race at a time. I'm hoping for a couple more wins when we come back from the break so I can give Suzuki a championship,"
